A large-scale rescue and recovery effort is currently in progress in the Caribbean waters for a pair of missing sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Cuba.
Authorities in Mexico has deployed navy personnel and search planes to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board a minimum of nine total personnel, per a navy statement.
The vessels had been projected to arrive in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their docking, the statement clarified.
The Caribbean nation has leaned on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country endures widespread nationwide blackouts.
"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety systems and signalling equipment," a spokesperson for the convoy commented.
The nine-person crew are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their consular staff.
"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.
Previously that week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a separate vessel that had transported 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the country.
That vessel, called "a modern Granma" after the vessel in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, formula milk, bikes and food.
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded efforts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.
International organizations have since warned of ""critical" supply shortages, with over 50k surgical procedures postponed in Cuba due to power shortages.
Political pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with remarks from various officials emphasizing the complicated nature of bilateral relations.
Responding to previous comments, a prominent Cuban official stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The Mexican navy said it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its reach to locate the sailboats and secure the safety of the crews.
As of now, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
