American Military Conducts Lethal Strike in Eastern Pacific, Leading to 4 Deaths

According to a high-ranking military official, the US armed forces carried out a fatal strike on a boat in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a deadly attack on a craft linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”

Context and Recent Strikes

The statement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military buildup.

Only on the previous day, US defense officials said it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Justifies Tactics Amidst Scrutiny

The government has encountered increasing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a successful operation, saying it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of legal military action.

While the administration has stated the operation is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide seemed to suggest a wider political aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”

This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a push to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
