One of the original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, that established the business with his partner, revealed how he plans to independently develop this new product as part of an individual collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.

Ongoing Conflict Between Founders versus Corporate Owner

The recent announcement deepens the ongoing tension among the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders have asserted how the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company against "honouring its social mission".

The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol for Solidarity

The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video how he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options and additional components.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”

The watermelon has become an emblem of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that match those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Historical Activism and Current Developments

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.

This upcoming product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that was first established in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions

Mr. Cohen revealed that he plans to develop other ice cream flavors focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.

The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years with the organization, citing worries regarding how the company's autonomy was undermined after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.

At that time, Ben Cohen remarked that “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."

“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can achieve the social mission, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
