California is Fully Free of Drought for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

Following 25 long years, not a single part of California is enduring water scarcity. This milestone follows grueling years marked by below-average rain that intensified wildfire risks and strained its enormous farming industry.

A Chart Indicates No Drought

Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor confirmed that all of California is free from dry or drought conditions. This development was driven by multiple heavy precipitation that topped up key lakes like Shasta and Oroville well above their long-term norms.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays

The journey here featured powerful and fatal winter storms that struck the state in recent years, resulting in significant overflow, electrical failures, and deaths. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, pockets like Modoc County were deemed experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

Yet, experts warn that drought-free conditions should not be confused with complete water security. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at roughly seven-tenths of the average for this date.

This mountain snow, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it runs off, is an essential component for long-term water security. Hydrology managers stress that it is not yet time to draw conclusions for the months ahead.

“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Even as the official status is entirely green, attention turns to preserving this precious water balance during the months to come.
