Entire Career of Earnings Not Enough for UK Employees to Enter Wealthiest 10%, Study Says

Based on recent analysis, the median earner in the UK would need 52 years' worth of earnings to attain the financial standing of the richest 10% of the population.

Widening Financial Divide Through the Years

This research examined net worth statistics covering the 2020-22 timeframe and determined that in the mid-2000s, it would have needed 38 years of median full-time earnings to join the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

An economic expert associated with the study observed: "Economic disparities in Britain are currently so significant that a average worker accumulating their complete salary during their working years would remain unable to attain the highest level of the wealth ladder."

Assessing the Financial Disparity

The research found that the difference between the net worth of the median citizen and someone in the richest segment was one million pounds in 2006-08, but had expanded to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by recent times.

The economist further stated: "These disparities are doubly concerning as economic movement in Britain is low – individuals who begin life affluent tend to continue being rich, and conversely applies."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Despite the economic divide expanding in absolute terms, the percentage of total wealth in the UK possessed by the wealthiest families – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s," as stated in the analysis.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK increased dramatically from triple the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Drivers of Economic Disparity

So-called "automatic" gains, through increasing property values and changes in retirement fund assessments, were the main drivers of the widening wealth gap since 2010, according to the study.

These gains typically went to senior citizens with real estate, the study demonstrates – exacerbating the intergenerational wealth divide.

Intergenerational Wealth Disparities

The typical financial disparity between people in their early 30s and people aged 60-64 more than doubled in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to £310,000.

Geographic Disparities

There were also significant area-based disparities, with the average level of net worth in recent years amounting to 290 thousand pounds in the SE of England, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, as opposed to £110k in the northeastern region.

Health Crisis Years Consequences

Throughout the COVID period, when millions of workers were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and health crisis restrictions curtailed consumption options, the information reveals numerous families were capable of accumulating, growing their net worth.

Wealthier families achieved superior outcomes, however. "The average household in the bottom income bracket saw their cash reserves rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), approximately equivalent to the pre-crisis period. In contrast, the average household in the top income bracket saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
