Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities released security footage Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
