James understood his monumental run of putting up 10+ points was in danger. When it mattered most, however, he wasn't bothered.
The right decision involved passing the ball – so he did. Consequently, his remarkable run finished.
James's staggering run of over 1,200 straight regular-season double-digit scoring performances was snapped this past Thursday, when the league's career points king finished with eight total points in the Lakers' close triumph versus Toronto. He provided the decisive pass, setting up teammate Rui Hachimura to hit a three-point shot at the buzzer.
“Nothing,” James said after being questioned on the record concluding. “The team got the victory.”
He might have tried to secure the game – and preserved his record – with the last shot, but he chose to make the extra pass to his teammate on the wing. Rui connected, and James raised his arms with his hands in the air.
You have to play basketball the proper way. You always make the smart play,” James noted. That has always been my M.O.. That’s how I was taught the game. I’ve done that throughout my career.”
James is acutely aware of his point total he has at all times,” stated the team's head coach JJ Redick. He made the play just as he has countless times.”
LeBron checked back into the contest one last time with 5:23 remaining, the result along with the historic run on the line. At that stage, he had a mere six points from a 3-for-15 performance then.
He scored with under two minutes remaining to tie the game but then missed a shot at one minute to go that might have pushed him to double digits.
He avoided taking another shot – though the opportunity was there. A teammate found him as time wound down, however, James chose to dish it off instead.
The basketball deities, if you do it the proper way, they often reward you,” Redick stated.
James's streak began over eighteen years ago. It stood as the longest double-digit streak the league has ever seen: Michael Jordan previously held a streak of 866 straight games with 10+ points, Kareem recorded 787 such games, and The Mailman recorded at 575.
“He’s such a pass-first superstar,” noted Lakers center Jake LaRavia.
He simply plays the sport. He had the opportunity but due to who he is on the court and his personality off the court, he executed the unselfish play, found Rui and secured the game.”
Reaching double digits was usually a guarantee well before the start of fourth quarters. During James’s streak, he had reached double figures entering the fourth 1,266 times coming into the contest.
However, two of those rare games below ten points through three quarters had occurred recently: He had nine points going into the fourth versus the Mavericks last week, followed by six before the fourth quarter against Phoenix earlier in the week.
LeBron was able to extend the streak in the Phoenix game. One game later, it concluded – and he celebrated anyway.
I only ever make the best play. That comes naturally, win, lose or draw,” James declared. “You make the unselfish play, the basketball gods forever giving back to me.”
