Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
The forward, with half a year left on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
