The state attorney general has rolled out a fresh online portal urging residents to share images and footage of federal immigration enforcement across New York. This action comes just a shortly after a significant immigration operation rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting large-scale demonstrations.
A congressional representative announced during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were arrested and detained for "almost a full day" following Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations erupted in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen is entitled to exist without intimidation," state officials stated in a statement.
"Anyone who observed and recorded ICE activity yesterday, I encourage you to share that footage with the authorities. We are committed to assessing these submissions and evaluating any wrongdoings."
The portal includes fields to upload photos and videos of the operation, as well as a area to indicate geographic details. When submitting, individuals must check a checkbox that confirms that "authorities may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, including in a lawsuit or public report."
The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say featured more than 50 ICE personnel, took place in a popular neighborhood of Manhattan where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and merchandise are commonly traded widely – frequently to sightseers.
Recordings of the operation reveal multiple masked and armed officers securing and holding a man, and shoving away onlookers. Masses of residents trailed the agents down the sidewalks. An armored truck was also seen rolling through the city streets.
At a midweek briefing featuring the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where US citizens should be taken for unjustly." He clarified the citizens were let go on the following day with no charges filed.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," Goldman stated. "This represents a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is merely a excuse to incite violence for this administration to deploy the military to stop violence that they themselves caused."
Anger over the federal action rapidly grew – all three political contenders denounced the incident, as did the state leader.
"Once again, the current administration opts for authoritarian theatrics that create fear, not safety. It must stop," a political candidate stated.
NYC immigrant rights groups voiced concern too.
"ICE descended on the neighborhood with tactical trucks, masked agents and riot gear to target street vendors trying to make a living. This operation had no relation to public safety and was entirely about frightening communities and areas," remarked the president of a rights organization.
ICE policy prohibits the detention of US citizens and the organization has stated it does not take into custody American nationals. However, external research has revealed that more than 170 US citizens have been detained unlawfully by ICE since the beginning of the present government.
Immigration operations have been rising in frequency in New York and nationwide recently.
An October operation in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the existing leadership. Rallies targeting ICE are widespread including claims of force and inhumane treatment.
