Norrie Calls 'Greatest Victory' After Roaring Back from Behind to Overcome Alcaraz in Paris

Cameron Norrie secured the most important win of his career by rallying from a set down to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory marks Norrie's initial victory over a current world number one.

"Massive. So big for me," said Norrie, who joins as the fifth English competitor in the record books to defeat a global number one. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I fell in the initial match of qualifiers here. I just tried to appreciate my game in the second half of the year. To get a victory like this, it's the greatest success of my tennis journey, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and arguably the most in-form athlete in the tennis scene right now."

The British player, ranked 31st in the world, also stopped Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive premier event wins, which marked the best series of results in the young champion's young career.

Alcaraz seemed to be moving confidently to a win in the beginning as he eased in the opening set. Yet, the British contender slowly battled back into contention by delivering with greater precision and dragging the Spaniard into lengthy, demanding exchanges. His persistent steadiness and reliability slowly took its toll.

During large parts of the match, Alcaraz served well but he found it challenging to get his timing right with his rally strokes. The rising talent seemed especially struggling striking his signature shot, which has been the top weapon in the sport for most of this year, producing 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 errors. Across the net, the British player presented his opponent very few errors, maintaining his reliability, fitness and depth all match while serving efficiently and selecting opportunities to force himself forward and attack well.

After battling for an extended period due to a significant left forearm injury and difficulties with his form, Norrie slipped as far down as No 91 this season. The Spanish sensation, despite his remarkable success, is has not yet solve how to produce his best tennis on indoor courts.
