Out of all the mature animated films I have ever watched, no other has remained with me quite like the dread-soaked finale of a explicitly bloody and deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, this Spanish writer-director created a dark, bleak , often savage universe that included a few small , desolate twinges of hope.
While The Unicorn Wars feels like it originated from a desire to advance the medium further, the filmmaker stated that it was actually an effort to express a universal, multicultural message regarding “the shared root of every conflict.”
This theme is conveyed via a group of colorful pastel bears , openly modeled after a popular line of cuddly characters.
Growing up in a community built around warmongering and the defense industry, many of these creatures are obsessed with killing the mythical beasts, due to a holy book which states them they were once rulers of the forest, before the unicorns expelled them.
Others did not entirely accepted the propaganda, , would rather experiment with substances or engage sexually in the woods.
In contrast to their cuddly equivalents, these bright beings show genitals and definite libidos.
For a particular particularly cruel, cynical bear, Bluey, the conflict against the unicorns transforms into a path to control — and especially to authority over his softer, kinder brother the character Tubby.
The character acts as a tormentor and an apparent sociopath , and as fear overcomes his group and claims his teammates sequentially, he grabs increasingly control on his own behalf, through ever more bloody, destructive ways.
At the same time, the unicorns are suffering their own horror, as a growing, destructive monster in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it feels like a humorous movie,” the filmmaker said. “But then it turns into a more intense and sorrowful movie. And in the finale, it transforms into a horror film.”
The Unicorn Wars starts out similar to one of the more playful movies from an iconic animator, that discover a naughty glee in letting drawn beings swear, fire weapons, or sex each other up.
Afterward it evolves into more akin to a bleaker work by that same director, with increasingly visual gore and a palpable relation to genuine suffering of conflict.
In the finale, it’s a full-on extreme drama carnage.
The fear that turns this a Halloween-friendly viewing kicks in much sooner than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the hardcore lovers of violence, for enthusiasts of extreme cinema who desire to view something they’ve never watched previously, and are able to withstand a plot which delivers no restraint.
See it with the lights off with no disturbances, and the conclusion will dig under your skin and stay with you.
