The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."
The last series concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only came recently.
Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."
"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."
The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.
The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
