The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will produce two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — including more material, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a six-month pause that began in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may result in one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others alternatively handling one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.

It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, anime production is structured in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
