During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
