The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
One could easily to get swayed by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by online forums.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
Considering Gilligan and his team are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.
“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, one could always use the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
