We're in the sixth week in the football calendar , following recent discussion about the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles as a potential Super Bowl match-up, each lost their unbeaten records.
Notable in those games was the amount of penalties each conceded. Philadelphia did so in key moments meaning they kind of defeated themselves after leading by two touchdowns entering the fourth period against Denver, who play in London this Sunday.
However it proved positive to observe how Denver quarterback Bo Nix was able to overcome that deficit before direct three successful possessions on three possessions during the final period, to win the game by four points.
The Broncos have the top defender in CB Pat Surtain II. They are first in goal-line defense, whereas the Eagles are number one in red zone offence, and the Broncos prevailed in that contest.
They had effective strategies in terms of simulated pressure. They weren't always sending extra pass rushers but they could position two linebackers in the 'A' gap then drop them out and send a slot defender off the edge.
At the start of the season, we said during a show how Denver could be this season's dark horses. They finished last season well then excelled of building upon that.
Could Denver be this year's underdog story?
Recently acquired tight end their tight end has excelled big while new running back their rusher is a guy they believe in. He now ranks fifth league-wide in ground gains (over 400) and tied-fourth for rushing touchdowns (four).
It's impressive that the coach Sean Payton has "RUSH!" at the top of his playcall sheet.
That shows that the Broncos are a team that wants to prioritize the run, because one can do a lot off the back of that. It reduces opposing rushes and keeps you in positive down and distances.
It's also benefited quarterback Bo Nix, who entered the NFL as a first-round selection in the prior draft, passing for 29 touchdown passes – just behind a star QB for the rookie record (31 in 2020).
Other elite QBs have the arm strength to pass all over, but they don't move the mobility that Nix has. He has incredible arm talent, a unique trait, plus he's so athletic.
His assets are his mobility, the capacity to pass while moving, as well as using different arm angles to make throws as he moves out of the pocket, the bootlegs. He can throw precision throws across the middle or over the corner.
As a rookie QB, at 25, he displays great poise under pressure and isn't really fazed by the blitz. He tries to avoid being tackled as much as possible and is able pass in tight spots. He possesses sharp intelligence and remains very decisive.
If you constantly run the ball it consumes the clock and forces the defence to stay in play for longer, and when you have a mobile QB the defense must cover the field downfield side to side. It can be draining.
The quarterback has pushed back at Payton during games sometimes and I think the coach likes that fire, seeing him as a fierce rival. In my view it's fun for him to coach a young quarterback who's similar to play-dough. He can really build something up the way he desires to shape him. I think it's a special experience for him.
Payton owns a Super Bowl and has passed Bill Parcells for career NFL wins (173, tying for 14th). He has witnessed everything. In my opinion the success the Broncos are having offensively is largely down to his guidance, his play-calling, his game sense – and the pairing with the QB helps make him what he is.
You wouldn't want a more qualified person in your ear, to help you through some of the tougher situations and build self-belief.
I have faith in the Broncos' defense, in Bo Nix's tenacity and composure. Yet are they strong enough to face a top squad at its best? Since that was not a Super Bowl performance by the Eagles last Sunday.
Right now, it's unlikely Denver are incredible. They're working above average, which is a good place to be in the AFC West. All they need is to continue this path.
They excel at leaning into their forte, which is the ground game, and this is exactly what they must do against the New York Jets at Tottenham. It will likely be a Dobbins-focused game, in essence.
The Jets have allowed 140 yards on the ground per game (among the worst), five rushing touchdowns so far (in the bottom ten), and they're the only team yet to win a game.
Since the NFL began tracking turnovers in 1933, this team are also the inaugural squad to be without any turnovers in five outings, this is surprising considering that their new coach Aaron Glenn a defensive coach with another team.
Patrick Mahomes says the Chiefs have 'already lost too many games' after Monday's defeat by the Jaguars.
After the upcoming matchup, the Broncos face a smooth-ish schedule up to their bye (in week twelve) - the New York Giants, the Cowboys, Houston Texans plus Las Vegas Raiders prior to the Kansas City Chiefs.
In the AFC West, Kansas City are 2-3 while Denver are tied with the Chargers at 3-2 meaning they could challenge at leading the division.
This hinges on what version Kansas City shows up they meet since Denver {beat|def
