New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans right away following his victory in November.

"This decision rested on our family's safety and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on implementing the agenda for affordability voters elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community famous for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Political Debate

During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his rivals, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his previous Astoria home.

With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is under rent control, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
